My quilting buddy

I have two favorite quilting buddies, my favorite cousin and my daughter. This is my favorite 'in house' quilting buddy. My 13 year old named Vanessa. This picture shows her in her corner of my sewing room. I taught her to sew when she was 3, I would put squares together and draw "stitches" on them for her to follow with a needle and thread. It would take her a good 15 minutes to get them pieced which gave me more time for my sewing. It took her about 2 years to get the whole thing together as there were a lot of "pauses" in her sewing attention span. But the picture of her at age 5 with her first quilt is one of my favorites! Since then she has made a couple more simple 4 patch quilts, and a pretty rail fence turned in on itself so it looks like pinwheels. That one she gave to her favorite music teacher when she had a baby. This past winter she wanted to get going on a Halloween quilt that she has been collecting fabric for. I picked out a pattern called crazy 8's and we used that. The neatest thing for me was when she told me she had figured out it was easier to make two blocks at the same time. She had discovered string piecing without me even showing her! I had wondered if it would confuse, obviously not! After the blocks were done she was so excited she thanked me for teaching her to sew. My pleasure!

How wonderful. I would think I'd died and gone to heaven if my daughter took and interest in quilting. She loves what I do and is good with fabric combinations but that is as far as it goes - yet. I live in hope lol

Great reading your blog. I see we have a up and coming quilter in your daughter. We quilters need all the help we can get.

How wonderful! I hope my own daughter will show that kind of interest in quilting and/or crafts. Although, since she insisted on sleeping under the heart quilt I made a week or two ago tonight -- I may not have to worry!

How sweet. I am currently teaching my 12 yo dd to sew. The computer captures her attention more now so she doesn't spend much time on it but we have a date to make a quilt this weekend!

I am so impressed! You are very lucky, indeed. I have a great deal of hope pinned on my granddaughter! I want so much to have a TWO LEGGED quilting companion, instead of the one I have that has four legs....

One of my daughters does a bit of sewing but not quilting. I think later in her life she will start.

Hey there! Thanks for the comment on my blog! I came to check out your blog and I love it! I love that your daughter sews, that you donated your hair, your dog's necklace and all your rings! I will come back and read further to find out what you have been doing. Until then, I have added you to my bloglines so I can keep up with you!

That's great! My daughter started one of those raggedy flannel quilts and it took her two years to finish it, but it's finally done (she's 23 years old now). I had to laugh when she told me one day that she liked quilting and thought she might get into it when she's old like me! LOL!

Oh, and I would like to join your quilt guild but then that would throw you out of the running for the World's Smallest Quilt Guild! Of course, we wouldn't want that to happen!

Too much fun! I spent some time sewing with my daughter and know how wonderful it was. If only she would do it more often.....maybe she'll catch the bug. You have a QIT there.....Quilter in training!
